Smoking Kills....in Films..Ban it!

am a smoker...
and am not very proud of it...neither am too ashamed of it either.
I do it, as a mode of pastime, in solitude, as a matter of thinking time for myself and yes, to some extent passing Boredom....
that is not to say that there arent modes or avenues to get over it ... or dont people survive without it ?

I dint start smoking coz someone prompted me to, neither will I end it coz someone will tell me to .
the day I feel i dont like smoking, I will quit myself, if I feel the need for it.
without going into pros and cos...let me say, its an individual choice and a discretion...
Now, coming to the topic, nowadays, we see in ads, telefilms, billboards, everywhere that smoking KILLS, It causes cancer...do not smoke, with health warnings here and there thrown around....
that is all fine . what irks me most is the continuous disclaimers in movies in a tagline near the screen.
What is that ? On one hand, we say films are a work of fiction, no reality and have no influence...and then the matter of smoking comes and oooohhh..no our youth will get spoiled ????
then why dont ban drinking on screen as well ? Or is smoking is a soft target , since smokers arent intoxicated and go on rampage like some alcoholics  :D
By the same token, why show murders, dacoities, rapes, corruption in movie stories...wont that affect the youth. ? I bet if films were so convincing on the youth, we would have had 90 percent of our youth afflicted with the above mentioned  evils  by now...
In the process we snatch the character graph of any well etched character...for eg would anyone imagine Sherlock Holmes or Churchill without their pipes ? Or Che without his Cigar ? I dont think so.
Similarly, for different characters with or without historical significance or as a modern character or anything, just a blanket ban on anything cuts out creative freedom.
If you really want to make a ban on so called evils like smoking and drinking, ban by all means...
But first ban the sale of cigarettes, bidis, hard liquor,et al and let not the govt earn millions of rupees in taxes from these companies.
Make it as an instrument of state policy or have it embed in the IPC or constitution and the masses will follow.
Selective Blanket Ban on smoking in movies  is not the solution.
High time the government and moralists realise that.
